Well I did it. I signed up for a St. Patrick's day 5k. I'll be jogging it with a friend from work. We'll be far behind another friend - but we'll be there. Mandy and I completed our Week 1 Workout 1 today. We have 3 workouts / training sessions each week for 9 weeks. We can do this!
My only goal is to complete the full training sessions and to complete the 5k without walking (a slow jog is acceptable - maybe even a crawl... but no walking.) I'll use this 5k as a baseline for the Arbor day 5k in April and the "Longest Day" 5k in June. I'm actually pretty excited.
So Laurie, if you read this, I need a recommendation for a good running shoe. I don't need anything too fancy. I have a pair of everyday tennis shoes that I use for running. Maybe new shoes will help with the motivation.

If it is to be...it's up to me!
If it is to be, it's up to me. I love this quote and it is so true. Just think about this for a minute.
If I am going to lose weight, no one can do it for me. It's up to me.
If I am going to organize my house, no one will do it for me. It's up to me.
If I am going to exercise, no one is going to do it for me. It's up to me.
If I am going to cheat, no one will know. That too is up to me.
We can get help by way of encouragement and we all need that every day but in the end if we want to do something chances are, no one is going to do it for us. We have to do it our self. This is what is keeping me going for the time being anyway.
I don't know when we are going to move, but I know we are going to and we keep saying we are going to get rid of A LOT of unnecessary junk. I really don't need to take all this extra junk in the way of weight with me so I better get busy.

Attitude
I've already started implementing my word (Change) by changing my word. My new word is "ATTITUDE". After spending the last 3 weeks at home going back to work was suppose to be fun and exciting. I was ready for the New Year - bring it on! Within 4 hours I had all I could take. My head was throbbing, people were ticking me off, and I was ready quit. "Take this job and shove it" didn't seem strong enough. On the way home I was thinking about how I could possibly make it another day.
I'm always telling the kids (esp MaKenna) to check their attitude and watch their attitude... I need to take this same advice. We've made signs and posted them by the door that say "Attitude is Everything".
I'm always telling the kids (esp MaKenna) to check their attitude and watch their attitude... I need to take this same advice. We've made signs and posted them by the door that say "Attitude is Everything".
- Attitude is a little thing that makes a BIG difference.
- If you can’t change your fate – change your attitude.
- Life is 10% what you get and 90% how you take it.
- The happiest people do not have the best of everything – they make the best of everything they have.
- Attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure.
- The only difference between a bad day and a good day is your Attitude.
- Ability is what you are capable of. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.
- A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. (Love this one!)

My Word For 2012...
I, like Elizabeth love the idea of the word for the year. Thank you Laurie for the suggestion and for starting us off. We did this several times in Relief Society but I never thought about doing it here. DUH!!!
I have given this a lot of thought since reading Laurie's post and Elizabeth's comment and I have decided that my word for 2012 will be "COMMITMENT". Here are a few of my reasons, in no particular order:
1) Commitment to myself. To get healthy and lose all that weight again. I have done it before and with every one's help and of course the Lord's help as well I can do it again.
2) Commitment to family. I want to be a better wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. I need to be better as an example and put family first.
3) Commitment to serve. I am going to be a better Sunday School teacher and try as Calvin says to learn to love the teenagers (yuck) that I have been called to teach. I am also going to be a better visiting teacher and do what is asked of me to do outside my calling.
I think 3 major "changes" and the "calmness" that will come from working on these three areas will make a big difference for the better in my life. I am sure there are more areas I need to work on but 3 seem overwhelming right now.

NOW what is your word for the year?
First Things First...
Some very sweet person came in and updated this blog with a beautiful rose background. Thanks so much. It is beautiful and I for one love it. I am guessing it was Laurie, but it could also have been Elizabeth. Whoever the sweetie was I thank you.
What's your word?
I have a friend who, starting this year, is done making New Year's Resolutions. She is tired of making the same goals and then falling short and feeling bad about it. Instead, she is adopting, from another friend, a one word theme to live by for the year. The word she chose is Purpose (if you'd like to read exactly what she has to say, just click HERE.) I'm not a big fan of resolutions, mostly because I've never made them and wouldn't even really know where to start, however, this one word mantra seemed like a good idea for me. It's something that I can focus on and apply to many aspects of my life and hopefully when the year is over I can look back and realize that my word made a difference. Today, I chose my word and wrote it on the chalkboard in my kitchen. My word is CALM.
I wanted a word that was positive and peaceful... a reminder of the way I'd like to be. The thing I didn't expect was how it would affect my kids, who, since reading it on the chalkboard have been trying to be calmer (if only this would last, ha ha).
I'm not saying that resolutions and goals are bad or should be replaced, but I just thought I'd throw another idea into the mix. You could pick absolutely any word... just something to reflect on day to day and apply to your life. A few suggestions: Strong. Healthy. Happy. Patient. Love. Complete... really the options are limitless. If you decide to pick a word, feel free to share it with your loved ones, share it on here or keep it to yourself, just make sure to reflect on it daily and attempt to become a better you by applying it to your life. Hope your new year is off to a great start, be happy & healthy and be your best you.
