WASH THE CAR BY HAND... Get the whole family involved with spraying, scrubbing, rinsing, drying, and waxing. You will save money, use a little elbow grease, and get some vitamin D from the sun to boot.
This sounds like a good tip and for you with kids go for it as for me and my house we will drive through.
